Day 2 on my trip to Sedona

It’s 7:30am and I have a 3 hour drive to 2nd Mesa to meet Gary Tso a Hopi Indian Guide.  This is the breath taking view at the end of the driveway when I’m leaving.

I meet Gary and we are off on a four hour tour. (no this is not Gilligan’s Island). Our first stop is the Petroglyphs. Gary is showing pieces of artifacts thousands of years old. All the art tells a story. The one I’m pointing at is the four religions ceremonies of the Hopi year.

Next we went to the oldest of the Hopi villages, Old Oraibi established in 1100 on 3rd Mesa.  I had to ask what a Mesa was, it’s the flat part of the rock formations.  The Hopi’s built their villages on the Mesas for protection. Unfortunately I could not take pictures in the village. The Hopi people remain in the ways of their ancestors, the have a Hopi language, Hopi Ceremonies, the Hopi clans,  and the villages remain very much like  it was hundreds of years ago with no running water but solar power.  The neat thing about the Hopi is that each Hopi belongs to a clan, when you are born you belong to your mother’s clan.  Like Mother Earth women play a major role in the Hopi culture. Hopi means “Peaceful People” and they are.

Now back to La Posada Hotel in Winslow Arizona.  The La Posada is a very historical hotel.  Here is my room, the Shirley Temple, each room is name after a star that stayed in it.

Time for dinner after a long day of travel, well maybe to the bar for a cocktail first. My dinner was the Super Veggie Special, sorry I started eating before I remembered to take the picture, so yummy. Then a little time by the fireplace.
